Burford is hiring a Quantitative Investment Associate to join our Strategy and Quantitative Analytics team, which applies analytical principles to evaluate potential and existing investment opportunities whose primary driver is a legal outcome. Burford invests across different industry sectors and geographies and through a variety of structures.
The Quantitative Investment Associate will be an essential contributor to the firm's investment process. A successful candidate will possess intellectual curiosity, a certain comfort level with uncertainty and an aptitude for developing analytical frameworks. The constant variety and generalist approach to investment opportunities will require candidates who are fast learners and can adapt quickly to new data and events.
The base compensation range for this role is $125,000 - $150,000. Burford also pays a discretionary annual bonus and provides welcome Restricted Stock Units to all full-time employees.
The role will report to a Senior Vice President and be based in Burford’s New York office.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Investment Valuation
• Collaborate closely with underwriters to develop and analyze investment models assessing the quantitative potential of prospective and ongoing investments.
• Evaluate existing and prospective investment models and term sheets to assess pricing structures, validate underlying assumptions, and value complex investment opportunities.
• Assist in the collection, integration, and analysis of investment-related data to inform strategic decisions and ongoing portfolio monitoring.
Research and Development
• Support the development and operation of Burford’s proprietary investment modeling platform, contributing to both model function design and implementation.
• Identify and propose improvements or innovations for modeling systems, drafting clear functional requirements and rigorously testing new features.
• Contribute to the expansion of internal data resources and tools used by firm leadership, ensuring relevance and reliability in decision-making processes.
• Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to enhance and standardize data infrastructure for long-term strategic use.

SKILLS DESIRED
Qualifications & Experience
• Candidates should have an outstanding academic record with a major in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, statistics, economics, or finance)
• Candidates should have 2-4 years of experience, preferably in a related field
• Demonstrated interest/experience in analytical modeling and data analysis
• Knowledge of statistical techniques (regression, properties of distributions and statistical tests etc.), and ability to contextualize data and apply these techniques

• Candidates must be detail-oriented and have strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• A collaborative working style that enables them to interact with team members at all levels of the company.
• High energy, self-starter with an ability to comprehend and quickly learn new concepts.
• A high proficiency in Excel is required. Understanding of Python is desirable.
